Sony develops thin-film with a bending display

Friday, May 25th, 2007 | Gizmo News with No Comments »

 Sony develops thin-film

Sony seems to be successful in its aim of producing a razor-thin display (for cell phones, gadgets, TVs) that moulds like a paper while viewing full-color video. Sony Corp. released video of the new 2.5-inch display (0.3 millimeters thick) on 25 May.

The fact that flat-panel TVs are becoming slimmer is no news but yes the creation of a display that bends in a human hand is a breakthrough. “In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person’s wrist, even worn as clothing,” said Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa. “Perhaps it can be put up like wallpaper.”

Tatsuo Mori, an engineering and computer science professor at Nagoya University, said some hurdles remained, including making the display bigger, ensuring durability and cutting costs.

The display’s pliancy is extremely difficult to replicate with liquid crystal displays and plasma display panels. This new display comprises of 2 technologies viz. Sony’s organic thin film transistor and organic electroluminescent display.

Some analysts have said Sony, which makes Walkman portable players and PlayStation 3 video game machines, had fallen behind rivals in flat-panel technology, including Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea and Sharp Corp. of Japan.

Fixed/ Mobile phone convergence V/S new convergence

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 | Cellphones, Mobile with No Comments »

Â
 Mobile phone convergence
The verb ‘convergence’ in techno terms has diverse meanings attached to it. Use of PC, laptops, notebooks and even cell phones (different products offering common service) makes it clear enough. But are we craving for this technology advancement? Yes, but unfortunately is not available. I am sure you must be confused by now but my intention is not to baffle you.
The telecom giants are seen busy in introducing new concept and the latest convergence is by Germany’s Deutsche Telekom. The big name has come out with its “T-One” product, allowing consumers to make cheap calls through a fixed line while sitting at home or by using your mobile on your way to office via using a single device.
Use of a single product like this to make life affordable is welcomed but the need of the hour is the access to various products offering common service. This will enable the consumer keep his finger on the product suiting his taste and fitting his pocket.
If this happens then it will do justice to the word ” convergence” lifting it from a verb to a noun.
