AT&T USBConnect Mercury HSPA Modem: Small and Powerful

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 | Gadgets with No Comments »

If you are a user of AT&T and want to download your web content faster and with a lot more elegance then there is some real good news for you. It is such a hassle when you need to plug in a very big and awkward looking object to your mobile in order to get better connectivity. It looks stupid and if you bought a real expensive handset that is all about elegance that it pretty much ruins all of it in one go. The new USBConnect Mercury though might help out a bit with that.

AT&T has announced a new USB cellular modem, the USBConnect Mercury. The smallest modem to date in the company’s HSPA range, AT&T are claiming the Mercury can achieve download speeds of up to 1.7Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1.2Mbps on their network. It also has an integrated microSD slot, meaning the modem can double as a portable hard-drive and memory card reader.

As always the installation is pretty simple with the necessary software and features but in typical AT&T style there is always that yearly contract you need to sign if you want it cheap. A data package with two-year service agreement is needed, unsurprisingly, and the USBConnect Mercury can be had free - after rebate - if a plan over $60 a month is selected. Otherwise it has a 2yr contract price of $100 and the retail price is a good $249.99. So go make your own choice with what and hoe you want to pay for the extra speed and loads of elegance!
